Vitamin C Skin Care Products

Vitamin C is often regarded as a wrinkle fighter or an anti-aging agent.

The main objective of ‘Vitamin C skin care’, in scientific terms, is to increase the synthesis of collagen, which is a structural protein that is found in skin.  The additional benefit of Vitamin C is related to its ability to counter free radicals, which are well known to damage the skin.

Using vitamin C as a skin care supplement, however, faces a problem. This is related to the oxidisation of Vitamin C skin care products. When Vitamin C comes into contact with air it causes oxidisation, which means the Vitamin C in the Vitamin C skin care products, gets oxidised; thus making the Vitamin C skin care product useless and in fact counter-effective. The oxidised Vitamin C imparts a yellowish-brown colour to the Vitamin C skin care product. This is something that you need to check before you buy any Vitamin C skin care product. Even after you buy a product, you need to store it properly and keep checking that it’s still good to use. If the product colour has changed to yellowish-brown texture then it’s time to throw it away.

The producers of Vitamin C skin care products have tried to deal with the oxidation problem in several ways.  In fact, research on Vitamin C skin care products is usually on the top of manufacturers list. One method of retaining the effectiveness of a Vitamin C skin care product for the long term is to keep a higher concentration of Vitamin C in it. The disadvantage of this method is that this makes the products much more expensive. Many of the Vitamin C skin care products on the market today are fairly inexpensive, so making them more costly could throw the product manufacturers out of business.

There are Vitamin C derivatives, such as ‘ascorbyl palmitate’ and ‘magnesium ascorbyl phosphate’, that are not only more stable but also inexpensive.  Even though these derivatives based skin care products are not as effective as the Vitamin C products, their stability against oxidation is a much improved that makes them better to use.  Also, these products are known to be less irritating too.

It is important to mention at this point that not everyone responds well to Vitamin C treatments. So do not believe it’s a magic potion in any way.  So, if you don’t see a noticeable difference in your skin, it might be because of your skin not responding to the Vitamin C treatment, even if you use a good product.

As more research goes into Vitamin C skin care, we can only keep our fingers crossed and wait for a complete solution.
