And, equally important are the facial skin care products that you use in your skin care routine, which involves the four basic steps of cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturizing (all in the same order). This process involves discipline and consistency if you want to achieve the best result.

Cleansing

Cleansing is the first thing that should be done your skin care routine. The process involves ridding the skin of dust, grease, oil, and other pollutants that are major skin irritants. The important facial skin care products in cleansing are cleansing lotion or cream, and facial tissues or cotton. Cleansing should be done at least twice a day, the first one in the morning and before bedtime. Dab a spot of cleansing cream on your face and neck and gently massage it using upward motion. Finish it by wiping with soft facial tissues. It is best to use water soluble facial skin care products in your regimen.

Toning

The next step on your skin care routine is toning, but this step is optional because cleansing can make up for it. This step also removes stubborn dirt, grease and other skin pollutants.  Using the right facial skin care products such as toners, this step can be done occasionally or on situations when you have been exposed to harsh environment.

Exfoliation

Similar to toning, exfoliation is also optional, but should be ideally done once a week. This process helps remove the dead skin cells that have the tendency to block pores, consequently helping the skin in the natural process. However, you have to exfoliate sparingly and use only gentle facial skin care products so as not to damage your skin.

Moisturizing

Moisturizing is the most crucial step in you facial skin care routine, therefore it should not be removed from it. Moisturizers thwart dryness which causes skin aging. Apply moisturizer using gentle upward strokes. Application is best when the skin is warm and moist. When you buy new moisturizers and any other facial skin care products always use the skin patch test to avoid adverse reactions.
